Taking a break

  • Are you taking a break from dentistry?
  • Are you planning a break from dentistry?
  • Do you want to get back into dentistry after a break?

What are the problems with taking a break or returning after a break?

  • Lack of confidence
  • Skill fade
  • Lack of contacts and networks
  • No VT number to get an FHSA number
  • Lack of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) to satisfy GDC requirements

Who is your local RRA?

Christine Osborne is the Retaining and Returning Adviser for Kent, Surrey and Sussex. A GDP since qualifying in 1980, she has her own single-handed practice in West Byfleet in Surrey. She is past chairwoman of Women in Dentistry, has held a number of committee posts in the South West Thames division FGDP (UK) including Director and is currently Diploma Tutor. Her dental interests are in education and training for the whole dental team.

Christine can offer advice about suitable CPD to maintain contact with dentistry while on a break and help dentists who wish to return to plan a smooth transition back to practice.

Keeping In Touch

The role of the RRA is to liaise with dentists who are taking a career break or who are planning a break. There is no longer a Department of Health funded “Keeping in Touch Scheme” (KITS).

However KSS deanery is committed to training for the whole team and there are many suitable courses available in the KSS Courses programme which are suitable for dentists returning to practice.

Getting Back To Practice Training

Following a meeting with Christine to produce a Personal Development Plan (PDP), you can plan your return to work. She can give you advice about suitable training to help you return to work safely and with confidence.

It has become obvious that the lack of contacts and professional networks can be a major problem for many who have taken a break. The RRA will be the starting point for dentists who have lost these contacts.

Where can you find your RRA?

Please contact the Dental Team Officer at dentalinfo@kssdeanery.ac.uk who will pass on your details.
