This one-day, international conference explores what happens when Western medicine meets traditional, indigenous healthcare practices, through the personal accounts of Elders, traditional teachers, and healthcare practitioners from the First Nations peoples of the Yukon Territory, Canada.

The Conference is aimed at clinicians and policy-makers with an interest in integrating their medical practice with the traditional healthcare practices of the communities they serve.

The conference launches a new MA Medical Humanities provided by KSS Deanery in partnership with Birkbeck (subject to approval).

The South East Coast Strategic Health Authority is consulting about the future organisation of postgraduate education in the region, in a process entitled "Excellence in Education: a consultation about the future organisation of postgraduate education for doctors, dentists and pharmacists".

The consultation is prompted by local and national developments, particularly by Department of Health policy that requires the separation of commissioning and provider roles in postgraduate medical and dental education. This DH policy directly affects the organisation of the Kent, Surrey and Sussex Deanery which provides postgraduate education and training for doctors, dentists and pharmacists in the South East Coast region and beyond. The provision of knowledge and library services, which is also managed by the Kent, Surrey and Sussex Deanery, will also be affected by the separation of commissioner and provider roles.

A consultation paper, entitled Excellence in Education, was published on 12th February and can be downloaded from the SHA's consultation homepage, at:

The consultation period is from 15th February 2010 to 26th March 2010. This is an open consultation and anyone interested in the future of postgraduate education for these professions is welcome to respond.

The Kent, Surrey & Sussex Deanery, in partnership with The Royal College of Radiologists, is pleased to announce the launch of a new NHS Clinical Oncology Recruitment website, www.oncologyrecruitment.nhs.uk.

The website was launched on Thursday 21 January 2010 and aims to simplify the application process for ST3 Clinical Oncology by giving candidates the option to make a single application and to preference their Deanery/ies of choice. Further, for comfort and ease, the new process allows applicants to have access to one point of contact for all enquiries during the recruitment process.

Academy MMT Pilot

Academy MMT Pilot

The Academy of Medical Royal Colleges are piloting an exciting machine marked test on 8 & 9 January 2010.

The Academy is reviewing selection methods across different specialties, regions and nations, with a view to continuing the development of medical recruitment processes that are fair, consistent and transparent. Part of their work in this area will be the piloting of a Clinical Problem Solving (CPS) test - and also a Situational Judgement Test (SJT), for Anaesthesia and ACCS applicants only - across a number of different regions in the UK, in order to evaluate their effectiveness as a potential part of selection in future years. To pilot these tests, the Academy is inviting all doctors applying to CT1/ST1-level posts within certain specialties (including medicine) to sit this, and to ‘test the test’.

The pilot tests will be held on Friday January 8th and Saturday January 9th 2010 at 23 different locations around the country. The tests will last a maximum of two hours - a maximum of three for those also taking the SJT - with a further fifteen minutes offered for candidates to give their views on the test and on the current process. Rather than being old-style pencil-and-paper exams, these tests are being piloted in association with Pearson Vue, who are a company who presently produce the driving theory test, and provide centres where these tests can be taken on line.

We would like to emphasise that participation is entirely voluntary, and will not affect your application to any specialty in any way.

As you can imagine, here at KSS Deanery we are particularly keen for any research carried out into the different methods of medical recruitment/selection to be as strong, and therefore as informative and indicative, as is possible; so that we can continue to review and improve the methods by which applicants are recruited to Core Training – both from the perspective of those being recruited, and from those doing the recruiting. Therefore we are very keen to encourage applicants to take part in this research, to gain experience of the test, and to give their views upon it.

While the prospect of volunteering two-to-three hours of your time to sit a test which does not affect your application may not be immediately appealing, there are a number of benefits to volunteers:

Firstly, as you may be aware, other specialties do include tests of this nature in their recruitment processes – hence it is likely that you will encounter a similar test in the future. Sitting a test now, with pressure off, will be good practice, will give you an indication of what to expect in future, and allow you to assess where your strengths and weaknesses may lie.

Participants will all be provided with feedback on their performance, including an indication of where they ranked overall – thus you will be able to assess where you currently stand in relation to your peers.

It may be the case that you currently hold strong views one way or another on the use of knowledge tests in recruitment; this pilot will be your best opportunity to examine whether your understanding of, and opinions on, such tests are accurate and valid, as well as your best opportunity to provide feedback and to have your views included in the analysis.

All participants will receive a Certificate of Participation, which you can then add to your portfolio should you wish – this will be useful in future in helping you demonstrate your commitment to specialty, and interest in medical issues outside of those with which you come into immediate contact.

All volunteers will be eligible for a prize! This is offered as a ‘thank you’ from the Academy for taking part, and will be awarded to one randomly-selected participant.

Lastly - as suggested above, the greater numbers who participate in this test, the stronger and more valuable the research and information that can be gathered on this test will be.

While it may not affect you directly at the present time, helping with research now will greatly improve the methods by which doctors are selected in future - which will of course benefit all involved within the health service and without.

JCST Situational Judgement Test – Guidance about arrangements

Here we explain what is involved in piloting the Situational Judgement Test. Arrangements can be tailored to fit local needs.

The test is voluntary for candidates.

Venue

The test will take place at the Mercure Hotel near London Bridge.

The test will be delivered in paper format. Deaneries will receive a package of test question/answer papers.

The paper can be completed with an ink pen which will be provided by the Deanery

Why am I being asked sit the test?

This is part of a Department of Health funded project to develop effective selection tools for entry into surgical training.

This is one of a number of deaneries that have volunteered to pilot this new test and we are grateful for your participation.

Is it compulsory?

Participation in the selection pilot is voluntary but we would really appreciate it if you would participate. We need to get as many candidates as possible to participate to ensure that we can develop an effective test.

Will I get paid for sitting this test?

No. You will receive a certificate confirming that you have participating in the pilot, which you will be able to add to your portfolio. We are very grateful for your participation.

What is being tested?

The situational judgement test is designed to measure a number of attributes that have been found to be important for potential surgical trainees. It covers several of the attributes found on the person specification.

Should I have revised first?

This test looks at how you deal with typical scenarios that doctors encounter. You do not need to revise beforehand.

Will my test result be used towards my selection interview?

No. The results of this test will be used for research purposes only and will not be made available to anyone involved in your selection interview or the live selection process.

When can I know my result?

You will not receive individual feedback on your performance. As this is a pilot test and still in development, it would not be appropriate or meaningful to give you your individual results for the test. The purpose of the pilot is to assess whether the test works rather than looking at the performance of individuals.

Will the results be published?

Individual test results will not be published. Reports on the development of the test may be published – these will not contain any information that would identify individuals.

Why do you need my name?

In order to assess whether the test is effective, with your permission the project team would like to look at how performance on the test relates to performance in the selection interview – for this we need your name and candidate number. Your personal information will be strictly confidential to the JCST project team. Your test scores will not be made available to anyone involved in the live selection process.

Why do you need my age/gender/ethnic group/place of qualification?

In order to assess whether the test is effective and fair to all candidates, the researchers need to look at whether any of these factors affect performance on the test. Your personal information will be strictly confidential to the JCST project team and will be used for research purposes only.

How is the test scored?

There are a number of points available for each question. You will get more points the closer you are to the correct answer.

The Study days are mandatory and are repeated from November to April so that trainees can attend in either their CT 1 Year 1 or CT 2 Year.

Trainees will be expected to attend other educational activities organised by their Trusts such as grand rounds and specialty departmental education sessions wherever possible.
Examples of such educational activity include clinical governance meetings, audit meetings and clinical class as well as targeted teaching.

Trainees should keep records of all educational activity and should in turn remember that good medical practice expects all doctors to teach themselves.

“November saw the second JACTAG event which was held on Thursday 19^th November 2009 at the Hilton Hotel, Gatwick.
